The first step to becoming a Puffing Billy Railway volunteer is to submit an Expression of Interest.

Puffing Billy Railway is committed to providing positive experiences in an environment that’s caring, nurturing and safe.  We are proudly a Child Safe organisation and employ a range of screening practices as part of the selection process. Through the telephone interview, you will have to demonstrate these core skills to progress to the next phase.

Next, you will be invited to attend a Volunteer Information Evening. These sessions are held every two months and may take place in person or via Zoom. They are an excellent way for you to find out more about the roles on offer and to meet some of our volunteers.

Suitable candidates will then progress to our Pathways Program, which provides an introduction to the Railway and our training pathways. This one-day program includes a behind the scenes tour and is held on demand.

At this stage, candidates will complete their mandatory compliance training modules. These are undertaken as eLearning and can be completed at home.
