With the Discovery Centre design coming along, it’s now time to focus our attention on the content and stories for the Discovery Centre and in particular on the stories that we can share with our passengers and the public.

The interpretive or storytelling framework for the Discovery Centre focuses on ‘People in this Place’ to examine the themes of railway, leisure and environment.  The proposed design of the displays proposes that all stories we tell should connect to people in this place - Puffing Billy Railway.

Puffing Billy Railway has appointed David Huxtable, an interpretation and exhibition design consultant from LookEar, to assist us in identifying and developing the stories for the Discovery Centre.  Whilst David will spend time referring to the Railway’s reference books/publications, he’s also keen to hear from you!

If you believe you have an interesting and engaging story that could be told in the Discovery Centre or any fascinating images or objects that help tell a story about people, please share it with us! To kick start your thought processes here are some ideas:

Railway Theme – The people who did work or are currently working on the Railway, the jobs that they did/do and any emotive experiences they are willing to share – interesting characters and events.

Leisure Theme – People escaping the heat and travelling on the train to Emerald Lake Park, swimming, jumping off the diving board and having picnics – memories from times past. Do you have any leisure stories that you’d be willing to share?

Environment Theme – Nobelius Nursery and the Packing Shed – transporting potatoes grown in Gembrook.  Are there any environmental stories you’d be willing to share – how has the world changed?

The railway has a long history, so the challenge will be finding the best and most interesting stories to tell…the ‘juicy morsels’ and the ‘fascinating characters’…along with any images or objects you can supply will help bring the history of Puffing Billy Railway to life.

Anyone who submits a story, image or information about an object by 11 March 2019 (extended from 8 March) will go into the draw to win an Attractions Pack consisting of:

  • Phillip Island Nature Park – 3 Parks Family Pass
  • Eureka Skydeck (including The Edge) – Family Pass
  • Sovereign Hill – Family Pass

We do ask that you please provide your contact details should we need to discuss your story in more depth.

We look forward to receiving your stories.
