After careful consideration of advice from the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, Puffing Billy Railway have made the decision to temporarily close until further notice.
Whilst you are temporarily unable to sit on our carriage ledges, you can still feel part of the environment in the open carriages as you travel through pristine forests and experience the magic of a day at Puffing Billy. Meet some of the characters of the railway, have your photo taken with the driver and along the way with the scenery of the Dandenong Ranges, feel the excitement as you cross historical timber trestle bridges, and delight in the fresh air and the sound of the whistle echoing through the hills. Remember to wave to every passer-by and get ready to create memories of a special day on board Australia’s favourite steam train, Puffing Billy.
GIFT VOUCHERS AVAILABLE
Allow us to let you in on a little secret...
Escape the crowds and enjoy a family outing on this lesser-known part of Puffing Billy.
Passengers can enjoy a visit to Emerald Lake Park either before or after their Puffing Billy journey. This park offers BBQ facilities and picnic tables, playground facilities, a wading pool and paddle boats for hire, and is the perfect spot for visitors with kids!
Did you know that Puffing Billy crosses four historic timber bridges between Lakeside and Gembrook?
Underway, the Railway skirts the northern boundary of the un-spoilt Wright State Forest, with large stands of Stringy Bark and other eucalypt trees.
As the train climbs towards Gembrook, the lineside bush gives way to extensive views of rolling cultivated farmlands, where potatoes are still grown, and distant mountain ranges.
Something to consider
You will be travelling on board a century old steam train that uses coal to fuel the fire and get the locomotive moving!
This coal turns into soot and smut and occasionally when sitting in our open carriages can travel through the air and land on your lap or sometimes in your eyes.
We want you to enjoy a scenic ride through the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, so please consider this part of the experience before embarking on your journey.
To best avoid the soot and marvel at Puffing Billy’s steam, passengers can:
- Bring along a pair of sunglasses or, if preferred, goggles
- Bring along a hat
For any concerns or questions, please contact us on 03 9757 0700 or see one of our friendly conductors on the platform.
