Unique Loco to provide twilight train ride
Australia’s only Climax locomotive, and one of only four still operating in the world, will take to the tracks at Puffing Billy Railway in October for a special twilight experience through the Dandenong Ranges.
Puffing Billy’s Climax 1694 is a miraculous survivor of a rare breed of steam locomotive. The Climax locomotives first featured on railways throughout the world in the mid-1850s. They were built for power rather than speed (they top out at around 13km/h!) which enabled them to haul sawn timber along the steep, curvy, narrow gauge tramways from the sawmills to nearby railway stations.
Climax 1694, the only 2’ 6” gauge locomotive of its type, is also the only wood-burning locomotive to operate at Puffing Billy Railway. Following a major restoration, carried out in the Railway’s workshops and funded by the Puffing Preservation Society, locomotive 1694 has never looked so good.
Puffing Billy is providing people with an opportunity to ride on the Climax at a special Twilight Outing, suitable for all ages. Passengers will travel through the scenic Dandenong Ranges at sunset on a round trip before arriving at Menzies Creek Museum for a carvery dinner and dessert.
Tickets are $89 for adults and $79 for children. Puffing Billy Preservation Society Members receive a $10 discount per ticket. Bookings are essential and must be made by Friday 28 September 2018 at 5pm.
