Steam & Cuisine After Dark

Welcome to the opportunity to step back into the romantic era of train travel.  Enjoy an evening of luxury dining with family and friends whilst whistling through the exquisite Dandenong Ranges.

Puffing Billy introduces Steam & Cuisine After Dark where you and your guests will enjoy this exclusive dining event in our faithfully restored First Class dining carriages.

Beneath the pressed-metal ceilings of these softly lit, fully enclosed carriages, you are invited to enjoy the nostalgia of bygone days.

Luxury and fun, whilst chugging through dense fern foliage and wide-open fields, is what this evening is all about.

When you arrive

You will notice that the daytime hustle and bustle of Puffing Billy’s charming Belgrave Station has subsided.  This iconic Victorian tourist attraction is quiet now, save for the touch of ambient live music and the hissing of the historic locomotive as it prepares for its journey through the hills.

As you make your way onto the platform you will be welcomed by our friendly hosts.  Embrace the opportunity to watch your crew prepare for the evening.  You may even catch a glimpse inside the Station Master’s office.

As the loco huffs and steams, the world of train travel is yours.  Explore the station, but don’t venture too far.  Puffing Billy toots and leaves at 7.30pm, winding out through railway sidings and majestic gum trees.  Your journey has begun.

On the night...

Our live musician will be performing at Puffing Billy’s Belgrave Station from 6.30pm, so arrive a little early and take time to enjoy the entertainment and explore your surroundings.  Boarding by 7 pm will ensure that you have time for a pre-dinner drink before entrée is served.

At 7.30pm, the whistle blows and you’re off.  Steam & Cuisine After Dark has departed!

As the historic Puffing Billy wends and winds through the Dandenong Ranges look out for the world’s tallest flowering tree – the Mountain Ash.

Entrée and main course are served as you rattle through ferny gullies and cross over the historic Monbulk Creek Trestle Bridge.  As the loco steams ahead curving to the right, a magnificent view is afforded of steam train engineering at it’s best.

Crossing country roads as you travel through hillside neighbourhoods, you’ll feel as though you’re venturing into locals’ backyards – give them a wave as you pass by.

The shortstop at Menzies Creek is one of the most scenic sections of the track. On leaving Menzies, the outlook of twinkling suburbs in the foothills below, and the Melbourne CBD in the distance is enchanting.

Once you arrive at Lakeside Station, we encourage you to grab your table lantern and take a stroll along the platform.

Your crew is working hard as the locomotive takes on water for the return journey – an essential component of steam train operations.  Watch as your loco reattaches.

This is a great opportunity to capture some amazing images of the steam engine at night.

Your return journey completes the evening, as dessert, tea and coffee are served.

Puffing Billy bids you goodnight as we pull in to Belgrave Station, returning at approximately 10.30 pm.  It’s goodbye for now from the staff and crew as you plan your next unique night out!

A menu to tempt you

Enjoying the Puffing Billy experience, the ever-changing views and the company of your guests is why you have chosen Steam & Cuisine After Dark.  To ensure the evening is as seamless as our narrow gauge track (762mm to be exact), we provide you with a pre-selected menu enabling your train hosts to serve your chosen cuisine without interruption.

Your delicious three-course dinner is complemented, of course, by a selection of wines and boutique beers from our neighbours in the internationally acclaimed wine region, the Yarra Valley.
