The only opportunity in 2019 to experience a sunset journey behind this unique locomotive, finishing with dinner in the soon-to-open Menzies Creek Museum.

Join us for this year’s Climax Locomotive Twilight Train, a journey through time behind a very special locomotive. One of the last built by the Climax Manufacturing Company of Corry, Pennsylvania, Climax No.1694 is one of two exported to Australia and the only one built to Puffing Billy’s 2ft 6inch gauge. It is the only wood-burning locomotive at Puffing Billy and is the only one of four remaining operational Climax locomotives in the world outside the USA.

The Climax Twilight Train is a fantastic opportunity to gather friends and family for an evening aboard this unique locomotive as it travels through the scenic Dandenong Ranges at sunset, finishing with dinner in our soon-to-open museum at Menzies Creek.

Climax Twilight Outing Itinerary

Our journey begins at Menzies Creek, where light refreshments are served from 4:30 pm as you watch our dedicated volunteers prepare the Climax for our journey. Its unusual design and wood burning boiler make it a complex machine, and our volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you might have as well as pose for photographs when safe to do so.

Departure from Menzies Creek is at 5:00 pm, stopping at Emerald for the uncommon experience of turning our locomotive on the turntable, before continuing to Lakeside.

After ‘running around’ the train at Lakeside, we depart for Menzies Creek. Be sure to wave to our Night Train Guests as we cross their train on our way, they’re enjoying one of Puffing Billy’s Steam and Cuisine After Dark Trains.

Arriving at Menzies Creek at 8:00 pm, there is a short walk to the Museum for a scrumptious spit roast dinner.

The product of over 10 years of restoration work, the Museum displays rail and other vehicles from Puffing Billy and around the world, both running and static. The evening concludes around 10:00 pm, once everyone has had the opportunity to view the museum in full.
